DIY Hydrangea Topiary

Did you see our hydrangea topiary style arrangement on our social media page?
Do you want to make one yourself? We'll show you how in the video below!

Step 1: Get Your Sh*t Together

You'll need-

Hydrangeas, 2 pieces of floral tape, our tapered vessel, and a pair of clippers or scissors.

Step 2: Prep Your Hydrangea Blooms

Snip all the leaves off the stems except for the first set right below the flowers. We like the greenery the last set of leaves provides in the finished display BUT if it's not your thing, feel free to remove all the leaves.

Step 3: Assemble the Arrangement

Take your flowers, starting with the largest and fullest one, and then surround it with your remaining stems. Make sure to keep an eye out for any empty looking spots. If you find one either rearrange your design to fill it in or add in another stem to the opening.

Once you are happy with the shape of your arrangement take one of your floral tape pieces and find the very top of the hydrangea stems, located just below the flowers. Wrap the stems in the tape, pulling on the tape slightly to create tension, and try to avoid catching any of the blooms or leaves in the tape.

Step 4: Fluff and Adjust

Once all the stems are arranged and taped together at the top, take a step back and admire your work. Give the arrangement a gentle fluff to ensure the blooms are evenly distributed. Make any necessary adjustments to achieve the desired shape and fullness.

Step 5: Trim and Tape the Base of the Arrangement

Place your arrangement into the tapered vessel and get a feel for the height of the display. Once you've decided on your preferred height, trim the stems to equal length. DO NOT THROW OUT THE STEM TRIMMINGS YET! With your second piece of floral tape, wrap the base of the display.

Step 6: Place Your Arrangement into the Vessel

Find a piece from the narrowest stem trimming and cut it to fit the width of the tapered vessel opening. Take the trimming and push it through the stems of the arrangement, wiggling to force it down towards the opening of the vessel, until it fits snuggly across the opening. This will support the arrangement and help it stand upright. Fill your vessel with water and display in a place of pride.

There you have it! Grab your supplies and get ready to unleash your inner floral artist. Make sure to post your results and give us a tag on social media, we'd love to see!
